6 Tips for Improving Reading Skills for Children: How to Help Your Child Become a Better Reader

Learning to read is one of the most important skills kids can master. It opens up a world of education and opportunity, and also gives your child access to amazing books that can spark a love of reading that will last a lifetime. Reading isn’t easy for everyone, though. Many children find reading challenging from time to time, and that’s perfectly normal. However, if your child struggles to read for extended periods of time or finds reading difficult even with simple materials, you may want to consider how you can help them build their reading skills.

1.Practice with Easy Books

Reading is a skill that every child improves over time as they are exposed to materials they find interesting. If your child is having trouble with reading, start by finding books that are easy for them to read. When selecting books, keep in mind that a child’s reading level is based on their ability to read the book, not their age. So, if your child is struggling, choose books that are within their reading level. When you’re first choosing books for your child, it’s often easier to look for series that are for younger readers. There are many series designed for young readers that are within a lower reading level.

2.Have your child read aloud

Reading aloud to your child is a great way to introduce them to books they may not be interested in reading on their own. Children who have a hard time reading on their own can often read aloud with little or no struggle. But, reading aloud also gives your child the opportunity to hear words read correctly, helping them to learn proper pronunciation.

3.Help with vocabulary

Many children who have trouble with reading have difficulty with vocabulary. This can lead to frustration as they try to understand what they are reading, or even worse, they may just give up on reading altogether. If your child has trouble with reading and vocabulary, consider keeping a list of words they don’t understand as you read. Over time, you can build a list of words to look up so your child can better understand what they are reading.

4.Tips for practicing sight words

Sight words are words that are often used in reading materials. Many children learn these words in the first grade, but others are introduced to them as they are reading on their own. If your child is struggling with sight words, consider having them practice with flashcards. There are several websites that offer resources for flashcards for children. Let your child know that learning these words is normal for all readers, even adults. It’s just part of the process of learning to read. If you see that there is a specific word that is giving your child trouble, look it up to help them learn it.

5.Try listening to audio-books

Audio-books are a great way to encourage your child to read more. First, audio-books provide an opportunity to read while doing something else. This can make reading less tedious and more enjoyable for your child. Audio-books can also provide an opportunity for your child to practice reading aloud. This can be a great way to help your child build confidence when reading.

6.Check for vision problems

If your child is struggling with reading, the first thing you should do is make sure they are wearing their glasses. Many kids who are struggling with reading are actually nearsighted or farsighted. If your child isn’t wearing glasses, make sure they are. Wearing glasses that correct their vision can make a big difference in reading.
